Alderney Commercial Quay

Description:

Completed over 3 phases Alderney's commercial quay is the island's lifeline. Without it the island would struggle to survive which is why this vital part of the harbour underwent a multi million pound extention and refurbishment.  The old quay was not fit for purpose and at over a hundred years old it was estimated that only five years was left of its useful life.

Geomarine commenced work in May 2008 and employed multiple skills and in house plant to deliver a complex marine engineering project. Over 850 12 tonne PCC blocks were placed along with 2500 metre cubes of concrete batched on site. Geomarine also undertook extensive diving work and drilled and anchored the blocks in place; The anchors were extended up to six metres into the bedrock below the quay.

Phase 3, in itself a £1.4 Million design and build project, was completed successfully in October 2010.

Alderney now has a first class port facility with multiple berthing options for freight operations, twice the previous cargo handling space and the ability to handle a much larger cargo vessel with all tides access; all to modern safety and security standards.
