Alderney’s long-overdue sewer and sea outfall upgrade is being constructed by Geomarine.
The company is installing a concrete pipe which is more than twice the diameter of the original sewer and nearly a kilometre long. Prefabricated Pipex plastic manholes will provide a maintenance-free, durable system.
The outfall section, off Fort Doyle Reef, was constructed during September’s equinoctial spring tides, Project Manager Wedd Osmond said: “The very low tides enabled us to construct the outfall end on time, but it was quite challenging, for example, for the area needing the deepest concrete pour we had only 20 minutes to place and finish the concrete.”
“We have almost finished the sewer’s beach section and plan to move into the road in early December, when the emphasis will change from construction to drain-laying.”
Labour, concrete and major plant is being supplied by Ian Tugby, with specialists from Geomarine in Guernsey.
Alderney States’ Engineer Julie Turner said: “We are pleased with the progress and are looking forward to completion next May when life can return to normal for the residents along the route, whose flooding problems should become a thing of the past.
“While the road is being dug up we are also taking the opportunity to lay new water and electricity mains over much of the route.”
