Myles Landick, groundsman of Jersey Rugby Club at St Peter was faced with a dilema when he found that, just a few weeks from the start of the Rugby season, his immaculate pitch needed to be dug up to install ducting and cabling for the new floodlighting.
Since the Club's promotion there is a league requirement for the floodlighting to be upgraded allowing games to be played throughout the season regardless of daylight hours. With the first league game of the new season scheduled for 27th August, there was really no time to lose.
To solve his problem Myles contacted Iain Barclay of Geomarine to find a technical solution so that the cables could be installed quickly and cost effectively with minimum damage to the pitch.
Iain and the Geomarine team came up with a trench/cable ploughing method which allowed the installation of over 500 metres of ducting in one day.
The machinery used is a tractor which pulls a unit consisting of a cutting disk, a 10mm thick steel keel, to which the duct is fitted and a roller which will roll back the turf immediately after the duct has been installed.
